what a crazy book…loving the illustrations.

Codex Seraphinianus, 1976-1978

‘The Codex Seraphinianus is a book written and illustrated by Italian artist, architect and industrial designer Luigi Serafini, from 1976 to 1978. The book appears to be a visual encyclopedia of an unknown world, written in one of its languages, an alphabetic writing intended to be meaningless.’

looked over portions of the book on amazon and got a couple of chuckles out of what i read. the format is a q&a where “charles saatchi answers questions from journalists and readers” with a mix of direct, silly and sometimes insightful tidbits…like this one:
Q: “What are you confident about?”  A: “Every day is the dawn of a new error”

only george lois (greatest art director of all time & called, much to his disgruntlement, “the original Mad Man”) could come up with this.

Damn Good Advice (For People with Talent!): How To Unleash Your Creative Potential by America’s Master Communicator, George Lois
George Lois

“There are only four types of person you can be. Identify yourself:

Very bright, Industrious (You’re perfect)

Very bright, Lazy (A damn shame)

Stupid, Lazy (You’l just sit on your ass, so you’re a wash.)

Stupid, Industrious (Oh, oh, you’re dangerous.)

If you’re a number 1 or a 2, you’ll get a lot out of this book. If you’re a number 3 or 4, why are you reading this book?”

Creative legend and legendary curmudgeon George Lois offers a lifetime of damn good advice in this gem.

i love me a good phaidon book, they’re always so beautifully designed and interesting to read. not sure what this book is like but here’s the amazon link if you’re interested: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0714863483

part of email exchange with art director about his book

  • me: ...what kind of book did you work on/write?
  • art director: a book of civil war caricatures and short bios. fun. won some awards, but i only made enough money to pave my driveway.
