There’s been a lot written about the evolution of creativity. One hypothesis is that creativity comes from our need to make things special. And this relates to worship because worship allows us to identify things in order to make them special.

We know very little about the symbolic life of animals, but one of the most fascinating aspects of human beings is our great capabilities to create and interpret symbolism, as well as our ability to make abstractions concrete. In many ways, this is the genesis of creativity.

Design anthropologist Dori Tunstall connects creativity and the impulse for worship in an exploration of how branding reflects an essential part of what it means to be human. (via explore-blog)

I often think that I don’t have a single new idea in my head. But the big mistake is to just wait for inspiration to happen. It won’t come looking for you. You have to start doing something: you have to build a trap to catch it.

I like to do that by starting the mundane process of tidying my studio. It may seem like it has nothing to do its the creative job in hand but I think tidying up is a form of daydreaming, and what you’re really doing is tidying your mind. It’s a kind of mental preparation. It’s a way of getting your mind in place to notice something.

And that’s what being creative is really: it’s noticing when something interesting is starting to happen and then building on it and asking yourself, ‘Where can I go with this?’

Most of the great ideas throughout history are not that difficult to understand. Once somebody has stated them they’re quite obvious and make you think ‘Why didn’t anyone do that before?’ And a lot of people may have noticed it before but they didn’t do anything about it.

It’s like Louis Pasteur said, ‘Chance favours the prepared mind.’ My version of that is ‘Luck is being ready’, because luck is about noticing chances and acting on them…

playing around with the panorama option on the camera app produced some fairly interesting results. i love all the floating noses. it’s fun taking a tool that has a specific purpose and turning it on it’s head…something unexpected usually happens.
